Alfa Romeo claims that the 4C is part of the junior supercar league. However, with just a 1.7-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, it only takes a review to see whether this car puts the underachieving Italian brand in the big league. The chassis is built with the McLaren 675LT-type of carbon fiber. Its mid-engine consumed about 42mpg on average with C02 emissions hitting 157g/km.

The 4C comes as a two-seater. The 1.7-litre is able to get the car from 0 to 60mph in 4.2 seconds. It completes quarter of a mile in 12.9 secs at 107 mph. The 0-60mph run is assisted by the dual-clutch automatic transmission which performs a shift similar to that of the Ferrari F40. The clutch, however, is very slow to engage and results in a jerky take off. Shifts also tend to snap off on the drive. There is no manual transmission available.

The abuse caused by the 4C is similar to that of the Elise. However, on an empty road, the shortcomings are acceptable. The driver should hang on, nevertheless. The car is quite sensitive, bringing whatever is happening between the tarmac and your tires right at your palms. Messages get through the unassisted steering unfiltered.

The chassis is able to respond effectively to braking, steering and engine actions. The handling is also neutral. The only thing that might take a while to get used to is the hard brake pedal. It is, however, easy to modulate. The 4C stops from 70mph at 150 feet. It’s bigger, wider, heavier and longer than the Elise. It is equally delightful on the race track. It does fall behind when it comes to agility and fun driving.

The open-top Spider or coupe versions offer high-performance to cost ratio. Their basic interior and abusive rides may make it a hard choice for a day-to-day drive.
