Before getting down to specs and performance features, the Audi RS7 still cuts it with its external appearance alone. This fastback-bodied, sleek, aggressively stylish and 20-inch-wheeled hatchback features a 4.0-liter, twin turbo V8 engine that delivers 560hp. It comes as an eight-speed, high-performance, all-wheel-drive automatic with lowered suspensions. For those that desire more power, the RS7 Performance is available with 605hp. All this does not come at cheap price. The features are, however, pretty close to those of the R8 supercar.

To uncover the capabilities of 605hp, drivers are required to set the vehicle to the Dynamic or Sport/Manual driving modes. The latter is delivered with the eight-speed automatic transmission. The Comfort or Auto driving modes allow the transfer to run on its default settings, enabling the RS7 Performance engine to produce the basic-spec 560hp. The Sport/Manual Mode allows the driver to push and pull the shift lever in order to swap cogs. This can also be achieved by pulling on the large and brittle paddles mounted on the steering wheel.

The latest RS7 is about 4,487 pounds heavy, carrying 34 extra pounds of equipment compared to its predecessor. This has also had a significant effect on the performance of the Performance model. Hitting the 60mph mark takes 3.2 seconds and hitting the 100mph mark from 0 takes 7.3 seconds. A complete run along a quarter-mile takes 11.3 seconds when the car is moving at 125mph. The standard car is quite slower than this, taking 0.2, 0.5 and 0.3 seconds more to carry out all those tasks respectively. The standard’s dual-mode exhaust system delivers a somewhat crude sound that increases its figures on the sound-level measurement. Because of this, the Performance’s sounds measure pretty low.

The Performance’s carbon-ceramic brakes bring it a stop at 160 feet at 70mph plus. This is 17 feet more than the distance required by the previous RS7 model and 11 more compared to a Cadillac CTS-V’s halt. With the Continental ContiSportContact 5P summer tires, this all-wheel-drive hatchback clings to the skidpad with 0.94g.

The RS7 has no middle seat at the back, making it a proper four-seater. It has a boot space of about 24.5 cubic feet. Extra storage can be acquired by splitting and folding the rear seats.

The interior design and quality of material are at the highest level they could ever be.  The RS7 stretches further than the conventional Audi with RS gauges, carbon fiber inlays, and honeycomb seats. Technology-wise, the RS7 features Wi-Fi and an exceptional MMI system that comes with handwriting recognition.

The only desirable change within the RS7’s cabin would be little more headroom at the rear and more cargo space. Such drawbacks are acceptable as the car looks really good.

The spec sheet puts the RS7’s weight at 4,497 pounds. This, however, does not barre it from slicing through sharp corners and jumping forward at the slightest squeeze of its throttle. A little exercise on the accelerator can easily turn the engine from a quiet and civilized beast to an over-active monster. The 8-speed automatic is what is responsible for such a seamless transition.

For extra power and performance, car shoppers are required to pay an extra $18,800 for the Performance model. Most of us, however, would be quite satisfied with the regular RS7. It is not every day that drivers get to exploit such tremendous power anyway. But, for the power-hungry speed enthusiasts, an additional $18,800 is well worth it. There is great power and style in this four-door package.
