The Chevrolet Suburban 1500 is a useful, full-size, and boxy SUV that continues to reign in the American market since 1935. The standard engine is a 5.3-liter V8 that generates 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. When transmitted through a 6-speed automatic, the car can tow up to 8,300 pounds. Off-road capabilities are enhanced in the rear-wheel-drive variant. The Suburban seats up to 9 passengers, making it an ideal vehicle for large American families.

Despite the SUV’s size and weight, its engine launches the car quickly and smoothly. It also halts half of its cylinder during light driving or coasting to enhance fuel efficiency. The four-wheel-drive Suburban can tow up to 8,200 pounds. At the driver’s seat is a thick-rimmed steering wheel that keeps away much of what is happening underneath. However, the delivery is direct and comforting. The highway feel is brought right onto the driver’s hands even on a windy day.

The Suburban is quite weighty. It struggles to keep up with other lighter and car-based crossovers such as the Chevrolet Traverse. On curvy roads, rapid performance is inhibited by its hefty curb weight.

The Suburban’s body is obtained from the Silverado. It’s a body-on-frame chassis that features a solid and coil-sprung rear axle that translates into a controlled, flawless and smooth ride. Unlike most trucks, the full-size SUV doesn’t shove its passengers from side to side. Neither does it toss your head uncontrollably. It, however, falls quite behind when compared to its rivals. Its articulate suspension, nevertheless, delivers a more sumptuous ride when things get rough.

Not all variants leave the manufacturer’s assembly plant in Arlington, Texas well-equipped. The 4-wheel-drive is optional and comes with either a single-speed or low-range transfer case. Shoppers are advised to select one according to their needs carefully.

For those with less off-road requirements, the Premier and LT versions come with a new and optional RST package that adds twenty-two alloy wheels. The suspension, however, remains the same.

The Suburban comes looking like an SUV ready to serve the Secret Service. It has a commanding presence that has been there since its early days. The only distinguishing features since its humble beginnings are the chrome-filled grille and unconventional headlights. Its appeal is timeless thanks to its crisp details and bold edges.

The inside is symmetrical. Buttons and other controls have been mounted below an 8.0-inch touchscreen. Audio and climate controls are grouped independently making it easier to access and sort through from afar.

The LS comes with a cloth-covered interior whose dash ends suddenly while cutting through the front leg space. The front has a bench seat. The Premier and LT trims have an optional mahogany leather option that can be acquired at $295.

For the current model, the RST package adds a more defining look to the blacked-out variants and 22-inch alloy wheels. The 2018 Suburban is available in 3 trims: LS, LT, and the Premier version. Buyers are free to choose either a rear-wheeled or 4-wheeled Suburban. The Tahoe cuts off 16 inches from the 220-inch long Chevrolet Suburban. If the SUV’s look doesn’t impress you, the GMC Yukon XL offers similar features with revised styling.
