The Range Rover Sport is an affluent mid-sized British sports utility vehicle and belongs to the family of luxury SUV's made by Land Rover. The first generation first appeared on the market in 2004, and production continues to date with significant design changes happening almost every five years. The most significant distinguishing factor for this particular make of vehicle has always been its luxuriously finished interior, powerful engines, and outstanding off-road ability.
Despite being installed in a 5600-pound vehicle, its powerful engine still manages to reach an impressive 0-60 time of 4.3 seconds, and the quarter-mile takes 13.7 seconds. This is a big leap from the first model in 2004 which clocked in at 11.9 seconds, is almost a third of the acceleration from a standstill to 60mph. This can be attributed to shedding off of unnecessary weight by using more modern, lightweight materials like carbon fiber in the newer models. While the Range Rover Sport is seconds slower than its main competitors, the Mercedes-Benz M-Class (3.8 seconds), BMW X5 and the Porsche Cayenne, it costs less and offers more options for the interior and exterior trimmings, even for the base model.
The new model of the Range Rover Sport is available in six variants: The S, SE, HSE, HSE with Dynamic Pack, the Autobiography with Dynamic Pack and the flagship model, the SVR. The Sport S comes with a 2.0L SD4 Diesel engine achieving a top speed of 128mph and a 0-60 acceleration of 8.3 seconds. The flagship SVR model comes with 5.8L supercharged V-8 Petrol engine. This massive engine gives this superb vehicle an impressive 0-60 time of 4.3 seconds, making it nearly 4 seconds faster than the base model. This is beside that fact that the SVR weighs in at 2310kg and the slower Sport S weighing in at 2111kg. The added weight comes from more luxurious interiors and finishing, but the bigger engine quickly makes up for this by providing more power to the wheels.
The Range Rover Sport's exterior design has been lifted over the years to a modern, sleeker look. The new slimline headlights and rear lights sharpen the whole profile while fitting into the overall design. The smoother edges and the new bumper and spoiler design improve the airflow for enhanced aerodynamics and cooling. The new bumper also enhances the downforce for better grip thus better handling. This new, more rounded shape has helped cut down the 0-60 acceleration time and quarter mile time down by more than 50% since the first model. The broader wheelbase provides better stability thus enabling higher speeds.
All in all, the new Range Rover Sport SVR with its 550 horsepower supercharged V-8 engine, and the base S model with its supercharged V-6 engine is by no means a small player in the world of SUV's. While it packs a powerful engine, it also has a very comfortable interior, larger seating space of up to 7 people. The ride is smooth, and the handling is smooth. Its off-road ability surpasses that of all competitors in its class. On the downside, however, it is quite inefficient in its fuel consumption. It is also slower than the competition, and many customers complain about the small trunk space. All in all, this is a superior car both in its class and price range.
